Your first jiu-jitsu class in Tokyo: what to expect

The honest version: what actually happens, what to wear, and whether you'll have to spar.

Most people's nerves before a first class come down to three questions: will I be out of my depth, what do I wear, and will someone try to choke me? Here are the answers.

Do I need any experience?

No. We welcome complete beginners alongside experienced practitioners, and the curriculum is structured so everyone can follow. You also don't need to be fit or strong — that develops as you train.

What do I wear?

If you don't own a gi, comfortable athletic clothing is fine. We have rental gis, plus private lockers and showers at the dojo.

What happens in the class?

Most classes open with a short warm-up, then technique instruction and drilling, then controlled positional sparring. Full sparring — rolling — usually happens after class or during open mat, so a first-timer is never thrown into it.

Will I have to spar?

Not on day one unless you want to. When you do, it's done in the safest way possible: control, respect and technique over strength. We don't tolerate anyone who disregards a partner's safety, because injuries are one of the main reasons people quit.

What language is the class in?

Both. Instruction is primarily in English, as our coaches are international, with Japanese support from local staff. You'll be able to follow either way.
